"Members of the United States Armed Forces are American heroes who defend democracy as part of their
everyday job."
NROTC takes great pride in providing Blue Star Service Banners as a symbol of support for our military men and women. As also, we recognize the sacrifices of their loved ones. The blue star represents one family member serving in the armed forces. Blue Star Service Banners can also have two, three, four or five stars, signifying up to five family members serving. It is only by the gracious donations of foundations, ordinary citizens and the business community, that we are able to do this. A "Blue Star Service Award" certificate is included with every Blue Star Service Banner. We know that your "Blue Star Service Banner" will be proudly displayed in honor of your family member while we pray that they return home safely and soon. It is our responsibility to insure that these Blue Star Service Banners are treated with great respect, and go only to those people or organizations that are qualified to display them. Please take a minute to read the following before submitting your application. The qualifying branches of service are Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard including active duty service National Guard and Reserve. Your loved one needs only to be on active military duty, which does not have to be combat related or confined to either Iraq or Afghanistan. Members of the National Guard and Reserve MUST BE ACTIVATED to qualify. The Department of Defense, DOD, defines eligible members of the immediate family as wife, husband, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, parent through adoption, foster parent, son, daughter, stepchild, children through adoption, brothers, sisters, half-brothers and half-sisters. Sorry, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Cousins, Fiancees and Inlaws do NOT qualify. According to the DOD, the Service Banner may "also be displayed by an organization" to honor the members of that organization serving or who die while serving, in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities. Organizations as outlined by the DOD are churches, schools, colleges, fraternities, sororities, societies, and places of business with which the member of the Armed Forces of the United States was or is associated. DOD regulations also state that The Service Banner may be displayed in a window of the place of residence of persons who are members of the immediate family of Service members serving in the Armed Forces of the United States "during any period of war or hostilities in which the Armed Forces of the United States may be engaged for the duration of such period of war or hostilities." The previous sentence must be read carefully to understand the intent and meaning of the regulation. It prohibits families of veterans of any previous war or conflict from displaying the banner. This has been researched and found to be true regarding both the Blue Star and Gold Star Service Banner. We are only able to issue Blue Star Service Banners to families of service members who are engaged in the current "Global War On Terrorism". This means after September 11th, 2001, and currently on active duty. Apply here for your "Free" Blue Star Service Banner if you are related in the above manner to one or several of our military troopers. Also if you are a current active duty military trooper yourself, you obviously are eligible to order one for a family member. With over 1,300,000 troops on active duty today, and more joining daily, we are forced to make the following limitation; While we would like to be able to provide a "Free" Blue Star Service Banner and Award Certificate to every qualifying family member, at this time we are only able to provide "One Family Member Of Each Military Service Member" with a free Service Banner and Certificate, and this only when our donations received allow us to do so. We try to see that the primary relative is the recipient. In the case of spouses "OR" parents for example, this can sometimes be a difficult decision. To avoid any misunderstandings, please consult with other family members if you think it might be appropriate, prior to submitting your application.
