Issue #11, DECEMBER 2006 Issue Date: December 4th, 2006 Total Active Subscribers: 42 From: Tom Ruley, President, NROTC Dear Readers, Welcome to our monthly newsletter. This newsletter is viewed by the general public entering from our website and is emailed directly to our subscribers. If you haven't subscribed yet, please do so. As a subscriber, you will be informed monthly on our charitable activity. Its easy, just look for the sign up area on the left margin of our website. I apologize for not publishing a newsletter in November. Quite honestly I had no good news to report. For all of October and most of November 2006, there were no donations received and 76 people were still on our waiting list to receive Blue Star Service Banners. I had reported in October that we were early in negotiations with a professional fundraising firm to conduct our fundraising. Well today I must report that the negotiations fizzled out and we are back to square one again. Recently I have changed our fundraising strategy somewhat. Instead of looking for telemarketers only to conduct our fundraising, we are now looking for telemarketers AND outside sales representatives. Hopefully one day soon, we will have a successful fundraising model established. Last month we did manage to send one Gold Star Service Banner to the mother of Sergeant Andrew Joseph Baddick of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Sergeant Baddick served in the Army with the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. His death is reported by the DoD as hostile/vehicle accident, location, Baghdad, near Abu Ghuraib Prison and occurred on September 30th, 2003. Rest in eternal peace Sergeant Andrew Joseph Baddick. I hope that the family members of Sergeant Baddick may be comforted in knowing that countless Americans share the grief of their loss and would offer their personal condolences if they could. On a more positive note, I am very pleased to report that our Vice President, Tom Conlan, came through for NROTC on November 25th with a $500.00 donation from his home improvement business. I dug a little deeper into my mostly empty pockets and with Tom Conlan's help, we were able to recently mail out service banners to 73 people who were on our waiting list. The reason for the number being 73 instead of 76 is because some people who I had emailed last month, telling them they were put on our waiting list, replied saying they had purchased their banners elsewhere. Of the Blue Star Service Banners we have just sent, 63 had single stars, 9 had two stars and one had FOUR STARS! Most of our readers know that as a matter of military secrecy, respect for privacy, and to protect all of our service banner donees from anyone, including domestic terrorists who may want to do them harm, we do not publish actual names or street addresses. To that family in Camp Hill, Alabama with four family members serving in our armed forces, we applaud your patriotism! That's what I call a real family effort! I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have mailed out those banners to the families on our waiting list. It made me very uncomfortable to think that 76 people might be questioning the sincerity of our efforts and the credibility of our organization. We are not out of the woods yet because our organization is once again broke and today we are still not taking any new service banner applications on our website because we lack the funds to fulfill the requests. From now on unless we change it down the road, NROTC is no longer going to put people on a waiting list. We will only open our website to taking service banner requests, to only when we have the donation dollars in our business checking to fulfill those requests. If at any given time we do not have the dollars to send out any banners, we will state plainly on the banner request pages of our website, that we are temporarily not taking banner requests. We will ask the people who want to submit a banner request to check back with us later. Hopefully this way at least, we will not have people submitting banner requests, and then getting upset with us after being told they will have to wait indefinitely to receive their much deserved service banner. We continue to touch people in a special way every time we deliver a service banner.
